Healing Smiles in Times of War: A Medical Clinic for Children in the Camps

In the north of the Gaza Strip, where war has turned displacement camps into long-term shelters, children face daily health challenges that go far beyond injury. Tooth pain goes untreated, minor illnesses worsen, and access to basic medical care becomes a distant hope. In this difficult reality, Al-Amal Society for Women and Child continues to bring healing closer through its Monthly Dental and Medical Clinic for Children Project.

This project was designed to reach children living in displacement camps, providing regular medical and dental care while supporting their healthy growth during prolonged displacement. Each monthly clinic begins with careful preparation. Medical and dental supplies are sourced and selected according to children’s needs, including basic medications, dental tools, hygiene items, and examination materials.

Before deployment, all equipment undergoes thorough cleaning and sterilization to ensure safety and infection control. Supplies are then carefully packed into organized medical kits, making it possible for teams to move efficiently between locations. Every item is checked and arranged to allow doctors and dentists to provide care quickly and safely, even under challenging field conditions.

Once on site, the clinic space, often a tent or temporary structure, is cleaned and prepared to receive children and their caregivers. Medical staff and volunteers set up examination areas, dental stations, and waiting spaces in a way that prioritizes privacy, comfort, and child-friendly interaction. For many children, this becomes their first medical visit in months.

During the clinic days, children receive general medical check-ups, treatment for common illnesses, dental examinations, pain relief, and referrals for more serious cases when possible. Dentists address cavities, infections, and oral hygiene issues that can affect nutrition and overall health. Each child is treated with patience and care, restoring not only physical well-being but also confidence and trust.

An essential part of the project focuses on mothers. Alongside treatment, awareness sessions are held to guide mothers on child nutrition, dental hygiene, illness prevention, and daily care under displacement conditions. These conversations empower caregivers with knowledge that helps protect their children long after the clinic ends.

In camps where illness often goes unnoticed, the arrival of the monthly clinic brings reassurance and relief. It transforms fear into comfort and pain into healing. Through this project, Al-Amal Society reaffirms its belief that every child deserves care, dignity, and a chance to grow healthy, even in the heart of war.
