When a Blanket Becomes Protection: Winter Warmth for Families in the Camps

In the north of the Gaza Strip, winter arrives quietly but harshly. Inside displacement camps, cold winds pass through thin tent walls, turning nights into long hours of discomfort and risk—especially for children and women. During the ongoing war, and amid widespread displacement, Al-Amal Society for Women and Child continues its humanitarian mission by delivering warmth, care, and dignity to families who have lost the safety of their homes.

Through its Winter Covers Distribution Project, the Society provided winter blankets and essential covers to children, women, and displaced families living in tents. The project was designed not only to protect families from cold weather, but also to reduce health risks associated with exposure, poor sleeping conditions, and weakened immunity, particularly among children.

The process began with securing suitable winter covers from reliable sources, carefully selected for warmth, durability, and suitability for families living in extreme conditions. Each blanket was chosen with the understanding that it would serve as the primary source of warmth for an entire night inside a tent.

Before distribution, all covers underwent thorough cleaning and hygiene procedures to ensure they were safe for use, especially for children and individuals with health vulnerabilities. The blankets were then carefully inspected, folded, and packed into organized parcels. This packing process was handled with care and respect, reflecting the Society’s belief that humanitarian assistance should preserve dignity as much as it meets urgent needs.

Once prepared, the parcels were transported to displacement camps across northern Gaza. Distribution was carried out in a calm and organized manner, prioritizing families with children, women-headed households, and those facing health challenges. Volunteers worked closely with families to ensure fair access and to provide assistance where needed, especially to mothers caring for young children.

Beyond providing physical warmth, the project included awareness messages for mothers on how to protect children from cold-related illnesses inside tents. Simple guidance on layering, keeping children dry, and nighttime care helped families make the most of the limited resources available to them.

In camps where winter nights can feel endless, these blankets offered more than warmth. They brought comfort, safety, and a sense of being cared for. For a child shivering in the dark, a blanket became a shield. For a mother, it became a reassurance that her child could sleep a little warmer.

Through its Winter Covers Distribution Project, Al-Amal Society reaffirmed its commitment to standing beside displaced families, proving that even in war, small acts of care can protect health, restore dignity, and keep hope alive through the coldest nights.
